Overview
Working in United Arab Emirates: what you need to know
The UAE is one of the most common destinations for Nepali workers. Employers in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Ajman and Ras Al Khaimah hire for construction, hospitality, driving, security, retail and logistics. Private-sector salaries are paid through the Wage Protection System (WPS), which creates an electronic record of salary payments.
Several airlines fly between Kathmandu and the UAE every day, so flights are easy to book and relatively affordable. The country's building activity, tourism and port and logistics sectors keep up steady demand for the kinds of workers Nepal produces.

Pay and cost of living
What you can expect to earn and spend
General gross monthly ranges, shown as guidance only. Actual pay depends on the employer's demand letter and your contract.
| Typical monthly pay | NPR 55,000 to 220,000 |
|---|---|
| Cost of livingLower when the employer provides housing | NPR 32,000 to 60,000 |
| Estimated saving per monthEstimate only | Up to NPR 188,000 |
The saving figure is a simple estimate: the lowest pay minus the highest living cost, up to the highest pay minus the lowest living cost. It ignores tax, insurance, deductions and remittance fees. Local-currency figures use approximate exchange rates.
Savings
Savings depend heavily on whether the employer provides accommodation and transport. Workers in employer-provided camps or staff rooms spend much less than workers who rent a shared room, buy their own food and commute. Ask your employer exactly what is provided before you sign.

Worker rights
Your rights and legal protections in United Arab Emirates
UAE labour law gives private-sector workers a written contract, paid annual leave (30 calendar days after a year of service under the current law), sick leave and an end-of-service gratuity. The gratuity is 21 days of basic salary for each of the first five years of service. Workers can generally move to a new employer after completing their contract or following the notice rules in the law, without the old kafala-style restrictions.
The WPS means employers who delay salaries can be flagged and penalised. The Embassy of Nepal in Abu Dhabi provides consular and labour assistance for Nepali workers.
Embassy and emergency contacts
Nepal's diplomatic missions provide consular services, help with passport renewal and, in serious cases, support with disputes and repatriation. Which mission covers United Arab Emirates depends on the country, so note its contact details before you travel.
Keep copies of your passport, visa, contract and employer details, and share them with your family. You can also call or WhatsApp our Kathmandu office at +977 9851062224.

Common questions about working in United Arab Emirates
Is it safe for Nepali workers to go to United Arab Emirates?
It is safer when you go through a DOFE-licensed agency, with a written and attested contract, a Labour Permit issued before departure and the mandatory pre-departure orientation. Avoid anyone offering a free visa or free ticket without a DOFE licence. Power Support holds DOFE Licence No. 1710/081/082.
What type of visa do Nepali workers need for United Arab Emirates?
The usual route is the Employment Visa (Work Permit + Residency). The employer starts the process with a demand letter in United Arab Emirates. After DOFE approval, Power Support helps with the document file and visa processing.
How much does it cost to go to United Arab Emirates from Nepal?
Costs depend on the destination and the job, and service charges are limited by DOFE rules. They usually include the medical, visa, orientation, insurance and the agency service charge. Ask for a written breakdown before you pay, keep every receipt, and use the DOFE Fee Estimator on this site to check the usual items.
What documents are required to work in United Arab Emirates?
Common requirements are a valid passport with enough remaining validity, passport photographs, academic or trade certificates, a CV and a medical report from an approved clinic. Gulf countries also take biometrics on arrival. See the Document Checklist on this site and ask us about the exact list for your job.
How long is the flight from Kathmandu to United Arab Emirates?
The flight from Kathmandu to United Arab Emirates is around 4.5 hours in the air. Several airlines fly from Kathmandu to Gulf cities, some direct and some with a connection.
Can I change my employer in United Arab Emirates after arriving?
Gulf labour rules on changing employers have been relaxed in recent years, but conditions differ by country and change over time. Your contract and notice period still apply. Read the country guide above and check current rules with the labour authority before you resign.
How do I send money home from United Arab Emirates?
Banks and licensed remittance companies can send money to Nepali bank accounts. Compare exchange rates and fees before you choose. Avoid unlicensed hundi channels.
Can I change my employer in the UAE?
UAE rules have become more flexible in recent years. Workers can generally move to a new employer after their contract ends, or earlier if the law's conditions are met, and the old sponsor-consent requirement was relaxed. Your contract and the notice period it states still apply, so check the current rules before you resign.
What is the WPS and how does it protect my salary in the UAE?
The Wage Protection System (WPS) requires private-sector employers to pay salaries through approved banks or exchange houses. This leaves an electronic record that the labour authority can monitor. Employers who pay late can face penalties and restrictions. It does not remove every problem, so keep your payslips and bank statements.
