The work

What does a electrician do?

  • Install, maintain and repair electrical wiring, control systems and equipment
  • Read electrical schematics and execute installation to plan
  • Diagnose faults using multimeters, megger tests and PLCs
  • Install lighting, sockets, distribution boards and switchgear
  • Follow site safety procedures including lock-out/tag-out

A typical day

Construction-site electricians work the standard 8–10 hour shift. Industrial maintenance electricians (factory, oil & gas) often work on call-out rotations. Tools and PPE are typically employer-provided.

How employers assess candidates

A practical trade test is common: reading a wiring diagram, wiring a simple circuit and finding a fault with a multimeter. A CTEVT certificate and site experience help.
