Working in Malaysia: what you need to know

Malaysia is a long-standing destination for Nepali workers, with a large Nepali community. Employers hire for factory and manufacturing work, plantation work, construction, security and services. Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Selangor, Johor and the plantation states each have their own mix of jobs.

Malaysia uses a Calling Visa system. The employer gets approval for named workers, the visa is issued before travel, and the worker completes further formalities, including the FOMEMA medical, after arrival. Deployment is often faster than for Europe.

  • Large and long-established Nepali community
  • Steady demand in manufacturing, plantation, construction and security

Factory and plantation workers often receive hostel or quarters accommodation, which keeps living costs down. Overtime is a big part of take-home pay, so ask how many overtime hours are normal and how they are paid.

Is it safe for Nepali workers to go to Malaysia?

It is safer when you go through a DOFE-licensed agency, with a written and attested contract, a Labour Permit issued before departure and the mandatory pre-departure orientation. Avoid anyone offering a free visa or free ticket without a DOFE licence. Power Support holds DOFE Licence No. 1710/081/082.

What type of visa do Nepali workers need for Malaysia?

The usual route is the Calling Visa. The employer starts the process with a demand letter in Malaysia. After DOFE approval, Power Support helps with the document file and visa processing.

How much does it cost to go to Malaysia from Nepal?

Costs depend on the destination and the job, and service charges are limited by DOFE rules. They usually include the medical, visa, orientation, insurance and the agency service charge. Ask for a written breakdown before you pay, keep every receipt, and use the DOFE Fee Estimator on this site to check the usual items.

What documents are required to work in Malaysia?

Common requirements are a valid passport with enough remaining validity, passport photographs, academic or trade certificates, a CV and a medical report from an approved clinic. See the Document Checklist on this site and ask us about the exact list for your job.

How long is the flight from Kathmandu to Malaysia?

The flight from Kathmandu to Malaysia is around 5 hours in the air. Direct and connecting flights run between Kathmandu and Kuala Lumpur.

Can I change my employer in Malaysia after arriving?

In Malaysia, foreign workers are generally linked to the employer named on their permit, and changing employers needs new approvals. Ask us about the current rules.

How do I send money home from Malaysia?

Banks and licensed remittance companies can send money to Nepali bank accounts. Compare exchange rates and fees before you choose. Avoid unlicensed hundi channels.
