For most Nepali workers, the first few weeks abroad are emotionally the hardest. Finding fellow Nepalis, at a community festival, a restaurant or a local group, makes a big difference. Many destinations have an organised Nepali community. Details change, so use this page as a starting point and confirm locally.
Gulf region and Malaysia
- UAE, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait: The Non-Resident Nepali Association (NRNA) and local Nepali associations are active in many Gulf cities. Look for them on Facebook and through the Nepali embassy.
- Saudi Arabia: Public religious gatherings are limited by local law, so community life is often organised privately or through the embassy.
- Malaysia: Nepali communities are large in and around Kuala Lumpur, with associations, sports groups and cultural events.
Romania, Croatia and Serbia
Nepali communities in these countries are smaller and newer. Ask your employer and colleagues about local groups, search Facebook for Nepali groups in your city, and ask the Nepali embassy that covers your country (see our embassy directory).
How communities help
- Welcome new arrivals with practical tips on housing, transport and shops.
- Festival celebrations such as Dashain, Tihar, Holi, Buddha Jayanti and Lhosar.
- Welfare assistance such as hospital visits, family contact and legal referrals.
- Cultural and sports events such as football tournaments and music evenings.
- Networking for jobs and business opportunities.
Find Nepalis online
- Facebook groups: search "Nepalis in [city]". This is usually the most active daily channel.
- NRNA Worldwide: nrna.org has a directory of chapters.
Be careful with job offers shared in community groups. Check any agency on dofe.gov.np and read our Scam Awareness guide.
